Next Drawing Class starts January 17th 2018

Back To Basics

The Back to Basics, Advanced Basics class is designed as the second in the Back To Basics series.   While it picks up where the first set of classes left off, completion of those classes is not necessary for attendance.  The focus once again will be drawing techniques based on observation.  In these sessions we will continue to develop skills in drawing still life subjects, this time advancing into new media, including colored pencils and conte’ sticks.  Students will continue to develop their own personal styles while incorporating color into their work.  We will also begin to explore abstraction and more conceptual ideas in drawing.

The class will meet Wednesday mornings from 10:00 am until noon.  It will be a ten-week course, beginning January 17 and continuing through March 28.  I believe this time frame will allow for artistic development in the basic ideas and skills of drawing and begin to explore more advanced areas.

About the instructor

Mike McLain earned his BFA, with specializations in drawing and sculpture, from Southern Illinois University Carbondale in 2008.  In 2010 he received an MFA in studio art from Claremont Graduate University.  His work has been shown in and around Los Angeles as well as in Illinois, Palm Springs, Joshua Tree, and Las Vegas.  He has also curated shows in Los Angeles, Pomona, Joshua Tree, and at the Coachella Valley Art Center in Indio.  Mr. McLain currently serves on the board of the Palm Springs Art Museum Artist Council.  He is spending the summer as a resident artist at Shoebox Projects in Los Angeles, where he will present a solo show in August.
